As far as a dermotologist, ask your primary health provider (your doctor) for a referral to a good dermatologist. Don't try toothpaste, though...it REALLY dries out the skin on your face. The most basic thing is to keep your skin clean, and try your hardest not to touch your face, as the oil from your hands can further contribute to your acne. Washing your face before you go to bed, and sleeping on a satin or silk pillow will help, as well.
Makeup masks are great (such as the honey w/ oatmeal), but I wouldn't recommend trying them without going to a doctor at first. Also, you need to know your skin type as well (dry, combination, oily) to know what treatment will work best for you. A dermatologist can help with that too.

I swear by the Clinique line for Acne care. I have seen nothing but great results every since I started using it about 4 weeks ago. It's expensive but it's cheaper than a dermo. Stop by the makeup counter and they will give you free samples

yes it costs money to see a dermo. if u have insurance, usually u see the general healthcare doctor. that doctor can recommend u to see a Dermatologist, and then u can make an appointment.
as for home solutions, try this. i saw it on www.makeupalley.com (if u have time, check it out.. they have great reviews on makeup, hair, and remedys for skin, etc).
at home, when u have a big pimple or feel it coming, just put a dab of honey on it. will help kill bacteria
wash w/ Cetaphil and warm water morning and night
at night before u go to bed, spread thin layer of honey on face (make sure u have a towel on the pillow, and sleep on ur back, don't move around!) wake up, wash w/ cetaphil and warm water. Moisturize.
to exfoliate: get a bottle of uncoated aspirin, $1.00 @ walmart
1-2 times a MONTH, take 4-5 tablets and drop a few drops of water on them, they will soften. add a few squirts of cetaphil OR honey. apply to clean face, rub gently. leave on for 30 min or longer. wash off w/ warm water, rub gently. Moisturize! ur face will feel softer~
good luck.

I've struggled with bad acne, and in the end I just stop caring and said this will happen and i just continue to wash my face with a white wash cloth, and soak my face in the sink with hot, but not to hot water, and it actually worked

The gel costed $50 but it lasts 1-2 months and well worth it

Benzoyl Peroxide. I get my boyfriend a cream, and face wash that is 10% at the Kaiser Pharmacy. It doesn't have any of that other added crap in it, and it works well.

if you want good acne treatment, i reccomend going to the dermatologist. i tried EVERYTHING, and nothing worked. my dermatologist gave me "Minocycline" pills and "differine" gel. it worked WONDERS. i had mild acne, and now, i have one zit on my nose, and i never break out ! it takes about 2 months for it all to go away. but you see results after 6 weeks !
good luck !
