Either of the three is a good starter, but I would recommend going with either Prophecies or Nightfall first. However, which of the two to choose from is a hard decision.
The reason why I said either of the two campaigns is because in Prophecies you can collect a lot of skills from simply doing quests. There's hardly a need to buy. However, in Nightfall, you are allowed to recruit heroes to aid you in your journey.
Heroes are a lot more manageable and helpful than henchmen. Once you've recruited them, you can level them up, customize their armor (not necessary, their armor advances with their level), customize their weapons, and also the skills they possess on their skill bar.
Another good thing about heroes is that they can be taken anywhere with you. Towns and regions determine the level of henchmen that can be partied in a town. In places where Level 15 henchmen can only be obtained, it is good to be able to take your fully leveled heroes. Heroes are almost like having real players in your party, but you can control them.
However, with heroes, if you don't possess the skills already for the particular hero's profession(s), then it can cost quite a bit. You will have to purchase skills from a Hero Skill NPC. This is the reason why I mentioned Prophecies earlier with the skills-obtaining quests. Heroes have the ability to use skills that your characters have already unlocked. Therefore, if you have played a Monk in Prophecies before Nightfall, then Monk heroes are able to use the skills that your Monk used from before.
All in all, if I had to choose between the two campaigns, I would say start with Nightfall. You can always save up a bit of money for hero skills if necessary.
By the way, if you are confused about the difference between Heroes and Henchmen, here's a little explanation:
Henchmen: NPCs which can be added to your party to aid you on your journey. They are available in every town. However, their levels are affected by the town or region that they are currently located. The more advanced the location, the more advanced the henchmen are.
Heroes: These can only be obtained from Nightfall. They are NPCs which are similar to henchmen, in that they aid you in your journey. However, are more superior to henchmen because they have the ability to level to 20, just as a real player can. You can collect heroes by doing certain quests. These heroes can be controlled in combat if liked, or set to a certain mode (fight, guard, avoid combat) and left to do their job in the party. Customizing their skills, weapons and armor is possible. Changing their secondary profession is also allowed. Once heroes are collected, they can be taken with you wherever you go. They can even cross over to another campaign with you.

You can start with any of the three: Guild Wars ("Prophecies",) Factions or Nightfall. Each is a stand-alone game -- they aren't traditional expansion packs.
If you haven't played any, I would start with Nightfall. It's got the most content and features, and the best story. Also, its got TONS of experienced players (who played the other two) already using it, so you'll probably find someone who can answer questions.
The Special Edition of Guild Wars (Prophecies) has a few extras in it -- a book of art, codes for unlocking some in-game skills and stuff, a music CD. For more info, see:

I bought the Nightfall Collector's edition; it comes with more stuff and the bonuses you get are more fun. More info at:

Are they worth it? I liked them, but it doesn't really change the game *that* much.
