It depends on how past due he is and what state you live in. In Florida (where I am) there is an automated system that will start as soon as he misses a payment and a series of steps before jail. The government really doesnt want to put him in jail because he will not be able to work to pay for his child(ren). First they send notices, then suspend the driver's license or any professional license he may hold, try to garnish wages and tax returns and then i think is jail.

Depends on how long he hasnt paid child support could be a few weekends or could be a few months to even years

The sentence for contempt of court varies from state to state. Could be thirty days could be a year.

oh its a small amount of time...a weekend or week or whatever until he (usually his family) puts up a chunk of money. then they release him.
