Because conservatism is different from neo-conservatism, or at least the brand of conservatism this administration's selling. Really the label conservative is just a brand name thing for the current White House. They have demonstrated time and time again that deception is their method of choice. They call themselves conservatives, but they are 180 degrees from it.
I don't consider myself part of the conservative movement, but I can respect conservatives who at least stick to their principles, like the ones you outlined, and reject Bush and his people as not being true conservatives, which they are clearly not. You already have conservatives and Republicans starting to realize after two terms of this expansionist government, increasing intrusion of the government into the lives of private citizens, and fiscal irresponsibility, that they've been duped.

Barry Goldwater agreed - he said we should not "legislate morality."
That's why he opposed the Civil Rights Act.
No word what he thought about slavery. Really, how does it affect YOU if your neighbor owns one?
(sarcasm)
PS Killing humans and creating state-sanctioned unions by judicial fiat doesn't sound like small-government conservatism to me. I agree that Bush spends far too much. I hope spending is slashed dramatically!
PPS Goldwater was also NOT an isolationist, as some ascribe to "paleoconservatism." He lost in 1964 partly because he supported greatly expanding the Vietnam War, which Johnson said he opposed. Goldwater also was said to have joked about lobbing a nuke into the men's room at the Kremlin, which didn't help. So he is probably not the best model for anyone opposing the Iraq war.

you're creating an surprising factor. i do no longer think of of genuine conservatives think of of like this, regardless of the undeniable fact that. the two the Republican AND Democratic activities have been taken over through technique of way of those with ulterior motives...it somewhat is precisely the reason i'm now no longer a Democrat and owe 0 loyalty to the two between the activities in any admire. IMO, a real American Patriot thinks with the variety and bill of Rights, and what's genuine for u . s ., no longer something of the international. optimal persons now no longer think of of like this and ought to easily somewhat watch television and the only suggestions that they get is from the media... how loads of them somewhat have study the "Patriot" act or any of the present expenses popping out of Congress? It takes time, yet keeping your rights do. to respond to the question which you asked, you're ultimate. Socialism is exactly that. the present international Order that Bush Sr. has pronounced is indoors the technique of going on and that's the end result. companies that they choose for for around would be triumphant, and ones that the elite do no longer care approximately won't be triumphant. The damaging get poorer and the rich get richer...trickle down concept is only BS.

Hence 'neo' conservatism. No longer the party of Goldwater, who, although he opposed the civil rights amednment, was a supporter of the NAACP because he DID believe in equal rights, just not legislating morality. And he believed that gays should be able to serve in the military, and was chastised from the party because of it. And so the fall began
Gays CAN'T marry, but should be allowed the same freedoms as the rest of us. Abortion is NOT funded by taxes, and never has been. And embryonic stem cells don't come from abortion. I guess the answer is PEOPLE ARE IGNORANT, and therefore, HATEFUL

As far as stem-cell research is concerned, the Republicans simply don't want government funded embryonic stem cell research. Adult stem cell research is still government funded and embryonic stem cell research is still legal, it just doesn't receive government funding. So this has nothing to do with controlling American lives.
Abortion is the murder of the innocent (at least in the view of many Republicans). While you may not agree with the Republican viewpoint on this, I think even the left believe the government should attempt to prevent and prosecute for murder.
Republicans are only against government recognition of gay marriage. There is no control of American lives involved. If a gay couple wishes to marry they can do so, but Rep's don't think the government should recognize their union.
You've presented a poorly thought out question in my opinion.

Both the Democrats and Republicans are horrible in this way. The Republicans on the above issues although a gay marriage argument could be argued since marriage means a union of man and woman to create a child. I think a civil union with the same rights would be acceptable. The Democrats want to control everything as well including free speech check out how they treat the minute men they will not let the people protecting our borders talk. Also, the Democrats are worse because they want to take all of the money you earn through taxes. It is pure thievery.

The Republican belief in small government refers to the desire to limit the powers of the federal government in favor of states' rights. The issues that you mention should be decided on a state-by-state basis.
From the phrasing of your question, it seems that you are not interested in debating the merits of each of the issues you raise, but attempting to paint Republicans as hypocrites. While each party can make arguments to paint the other in some negative light, it would seem more productive for us to debate the issues and avoid the divisiveness of negativity for the sake of negativity.

In the case of those three issues, it's because they are pandering to their "base"
Basically conservative Christians tend to be very politically active which gives them more political clout than they deserve based upon their actually percentage of the population. The Republicans rely on their votes and support and associating themselves with people claim to be of "high moral fiber" lends a certain credibility to them which they can use as a smoke screen to conceal and deny some of their more evil activities.

Because the present day Republican party wants to dictate morality--what they think is moral, rather. Thus the government has to interfere in private lives and take away civil liberties to accomplish that mission.
