Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded at Fotheringay Castle in England on February 8, 1587 at about 8:30 in the morning.

She was executed by her cousin Queen Elizabeth I for conspiring against the English queen's life. Mary's son King James VI of Scotland agreed to his mother's death for political reasons. She had been forced to abdicate when James was nine months old, and she fled to England after escaping imprisonment in Scotland by her illegitimate brother (who could not legally be king of Scotland) and other Scottish lords.

It took three blows of the axe to decapitate Mary. The first blow stuck her in the back of the head. The second blow went most of the way through her neck. The last blow was to sever the piece of skin that still held her head on.

When the executioner held her head aloft as was the custom, her head fell to the floor. All that was left in his hand was her wig and headdress. Like most noble ladies at the time, she wore a wig for reasons of hygiene and also to follow a popular fashion then current.

Throughout her trial and execution, Mary Queen of Scots behaved with courage and dignity. It was said of the Stuarts, "They did not know how to rule, but they knew how to die." This was true of Mary, of her father and grandfather (Kings James IV and V of Scotland), and of her grandson King Charles I of Great Britain, and her other progeny, the Stuart Dynasty of Scotland and England. Under their rule began the Constitutional Monarchy of Great Britain, now the United Kingdom of the British Isles.

Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle (it no longer exists apart from a ruin) on February 8, 1587. The sources that I have looked at simply say that it was early in the morning.

"Mary's trial lasted just two days and was over on 16 October 1586 but it was not until 7 February 1587 that she was told she would be executed the next morning."

"Mary did not retire until two in the morning on the last day of her life. She spent her final hours making a will and generously providing to those who had served her faithfully. Early on the morning of 8 February 1587, dressed in black satin and velvet, she entered the Great Hall of Fotheringhay Castle."

Here is a very poignant description of her death by an eyewitness:
