The colour of the urine is caused by a yellow pigment called UROCHROME secreted by the kidneys in a fairly constant amount per day and everyday.
The kidneys normally excrete about 1500mls of water per day. When somebody is dehydrated the amount of urine decreases to about 800 mls or less/day so the secreted urochrome becomes more concentrated and therefore the urine looks darker.
When the person is well hydrated eg intake of 4 litres in a day the kidneys will excrete nearly the same amount or a little less. In that case the urochrome will be diluted so the urine looks paler.
Between these two extremes there are various shades of yellow which reflects the STATE OF HYDRATION of the body.
The colour of the urine is therefore a very good indicator of the state of hydration of the body.

The color of our urine is directly proportionate to our level of hydration. When we go longer periods without taking in water, our urine becomes concentrated with ureic acid(urea) and it has the yellow color, just like stomach bile! But when you drink those eight glasses a day, our urine is pretty much clear! A good sign that you are washing out your system! Hope that helps. Happy New Year all you yahooligans!

Yes, it's to do with how hydrated you are
Light yellow/almost clear means you've drunk enough water/liquid
dark yellow means you are dehydrated - drink at least 8 large glasses of water a day
brown - seriously dehydrated
red - can be that you've eaten root vegetables like beetroot but make sure there is no blood as it could be a kidney infection.
green - asparagus can colour your urine.

The kidneys serve two major functions: they keep the salt content of the blood constant, and they filter waste out of the bloodstream. So, the main components of urine are (salt) water and waste products. The major waste product from cells in the body is ammonia, and the major waste product from blood is a broken form of heme called bilirubin. In the liver, each of these is converted into a less hazardous form: ammonia is converted to urea, and bilirubin is degraded to urobilins. Salt, water, and urea are all colorless, but urobilins (which come from degraded pigments) are yellow. So, if you drink a lot, your urine will be more dilute and clearer, and if you get dehydrated, your urine will contain less water and be darker yellow.

Yes the more hydrated you are the lighter the colour. If you are not drinking enough water it is a darker yellow and smells. If it is clear that usually means you are having a problem keeping hydrated(when you have the flu) or you are drinking too much water.

Urine is 95% water. The more liquid you drink, the paler it will become. Likewise, dehydration will cause it to darken in colour.
My late friend was passing urine that was the colour of blackcurrant cordial. He died from cancer within 2 months.

urine is the waste product of your cells via your kidneys. The more you drink the more hydrated your body is the lighter your urine is as it contains waste water. and vice versa.
re deplhi 13's answer, what you eat doesn't change the colour of your urine. you may get red poo if you eat beetroot but not red urine. (found that out yesterday in that 'why don't penguins feet freeze' book)

The colour is determined by hydration. The more hydrated you are, the less yellow urine is. The more dehydrated you are, the more yellow it is.

I went docs for same propblem and they did a sample and apparently if your urine is light your fully hydrated, If your like me and dont drink enough water you have some sort of cells in your urine to show that youre not drinking enough water.
or...
You could have a water infection and not realised you have one. Get checked out at the doctors
