Um...not orchids - you have to watch them pretty closely. Try something like pansies or violets. Check at your local nursery or gardening center.

I would suggest a Christmas Cactus. Although they are a seasonal bloomer (normally from the end of November towards mid-February...hence the name), they produce a beautiful pink flower. The Christmas Cactus is actually a type of orchid cactus, and while the plain Orchid Cactus produce beautiful large red flowers (blooming period in mid-summer), the larger flowers prove to be messier to clean up.

A Christmas Cactus is a very low-maintenance house plant. It requires water every four or five days, and can survive with 4 or 5 hours of indirect sunlight.

Good luck in your search!

A note about the Christmas Cactus: Don't be fooled by the word cactus. The needles of the plant are very small, and more than likely a child couldn't get poked with one.

This might seem to be the EXACT opposite of what you are looking for, but for some reason, it MAY make a lot of sense.

I recently purchase some PLUMERIA cuttlings from ebay. Plumerias produce "Lei," flowers that you get when you visit Hawaii (I'm quite positive about this). Although it will take some time and warm weather (summer outdoors and winter indoors), all it really needs is water once a week.

I have 4, but only set one of them in a pot for now. It's been a long 2 months (fall/winter) but the leaves are starting to take shape. All I did was pot the cuttling and add water once a week. Hope this helps.

I love flowers too but can't seem to grow a thing. However I have had the best luck with a cymbidium orchid. No kidding. They are beautiful, need to be watered once every 2 weeks and when the blooms fade put it outside and it will sprout again..Good Luck...$25.00 at Trader Joes

african violet
It's best if you water it a little each day, but survives for periods of time if you forget. You don't want to pour water over it's leaves, but it won't die if you do. Splotches could appear where you poured water, though. It has pretty blooms, too.
You could also get a cactus. Those don't need much attention, but you'd have to keep them away from little children.

African violets are indeed an easy care plant and come in many colours. So are begonia and herbs in pots on a sunny windowsill. They are also nice for cutting for cooking.

African violets. Water once a week, give them plenty of light and watch them grow.

My mother always grew geraniums. They required very little watering and little light.
