Listen to him.
A good listener will ask questions:
Why have you lost purpose? What about ... ? Would it help if ...?
Don't give any answers until they get their story out. Too often ppl just suffer from not sharing their stories. Keep asking questions until they are finding hope. You can direct ppl into positive moods by asking questions that will produce positive answers.
Remember, it's not your position to give him purpose ... you can ask questions to lead him to find his own purpose that he's got inside that's hidding, but it's his journey that he's got to find to fulfill his purpose.
Listening (asking questions) is golden in these situations. Often, when you ask, you too will find hope and meaning for your own journey.

On the topic, you can't really do anything about it..... Make sure to let him know your there for him.... I had a friend with the same problem last valentines day... I just made sure that he knew I loved him, that he was like a brother to me.. and now we're better friends because of it too.

you cant fix somebody, as a friend all you can do is let him know you are there for him, in a non judgmental way. If you feel he is a danger to him self or others, try to convince him to get professional help. As his friend maybe you could get him out and show him that life is worth enjoying, the last thing he needs to be alone with his dark thoughts

If worst comes to worst, remind him of all the people who might get hurt if he leaves this world. Remind him that you are always there for him. If there are great memories that you two have together, remind him of those example: "Remember that one time when we played football at school after dark?"
Definitely, no matter what, get him to see a shrink or someone professional, who knows what to say, even when you don't.

i guess you were shocked. Does he have a reason to live? I am assuming the ansewer is yes. I would put yourself out there to him. Let him know this will pass. Depending on his relationships with others explain to him how selfish this is. Ask him if he lost some one and how he felt. Despite what you think it affects everyone around him/her.

give him a book by camuse to read, he's a great philosophical writer.
tell him nobody has a porpuse in life.
tell him if he knows life is absurd he might as well continue it's absurdity instead of ending it.
if he's intelligent he'll understand.
