Because they are afraid of opposing ideas.
You see, if they give their opponents credit for having political beliefs based on logic and reason, that would mean their own beliefs may be incorrect. They cannot tolerate the concepts that their beliefs might be wrong and that other people would accept other beliefs as correct.
For the supposedly tolerant and open and peaceful liberals, many show intolerance and a closed mind and a tendency to violence.

College kids are idealists for the most part, and a large percentage of them are liberal thinking in their politics. Though these days there are many conservatives who are against Bush's War as well. What agenda are you suggesting? There's no agenda for college kids lol. They are simply more apt to be liberals in general, it has always been that way, and they love to speak out when given the chance. Any conservative worth their salt knows that going in when they visit a college campus. If they don't they need to go back to school themselves.

I have learned that liberals do not believe in free speech. I was watching those hideous people last night on TV where they would not let the people that protect the border to the United States speak at a college assembly. I was horrified and so so so thankful that I never attended college. Our universities are an embarrassment to everything that America stands for.

The answer is simple, when people have weak ideas or they don't feel that their point of view cannot be backed up with facts or that they cannot debate you strictly on the strength of their ideas.
There is only one recourse left, shout you down and shut you up.
