in the morning...it lasts a couple of hours but gets better throughout the day. Is this a medical condition or just a fact of getting older?

could be "heel spurs" i had that and the doc gave me some pads for my shoes and it soon cleared up.

I had trouble like that and put it down to an old injury (inflamed achilles tendon) until finally a foot specialist diagnoised a deformed bone in my foot which caused it to be out of alignment. Could be plantar phashyitis sorry bad spelling but your arch could be falling causing your heel pain.
