My mother wanted me to ask this question. She will be having a complete hysterectomy this month, and she has been hearing some bad stories from family members, ect... that when a woman has a hysterectomy - she loses her mind. She has a completely different attitude, and is mean, and hateful. Is any of this true? Also, people have been telling her that it will be worse that having a baby. That the pain will be unbareable. Is this true? I told her that different women will have different experiences, and that she might not have much trouble. Is that good advice? I don't want to sugar coat it, but I don't want her to worrie so much eaither!! I would like to hear from women who has actually had an hysterectomy. I appreciate any help and I thank you!

Tell her that she doesn't have to worry at all
That was an old theory that craziness was derived from the uterus hence the term hysteria.
But today we know that there is nothing to do with it.
on occasions the surgeon may take the ovaries too, then she will experience the symptoms of menopause and she may became moody have hot flushes, and so but usually that disappears after a while.
If its just the uterus none of these things will happen.
about the pain it depends on each person but usually it is not that bad its similar to a c section and it will disappear in a few days (about 2 weeks at the most).
Yell your mother not to worry too much and that everything will be fine.

I have had a complete hysterectomy and not only to I feel great and have no periods any longer, I was released for work after 10 days, not the normal 6 weeks. I am 38. I think the attitude and age make a huge difference but of course everyone is different.

No, a hysterectomy itself, no matter how "complete", doesn't make a woman go crazy.

A simple hysterectomy, removing just the uterus and cervix, leaves a woman with a slightly shorter vagina but otherwise normal.

If a cuff is removed along with the cervix, she'll have a shorter vagina which will still allow almost normal intercourse.

If she has vaginal ablation she will not be able to have intercourse again.

The term "total hysterectomy" is normally used in the US to describe removal of the ovaries along with the uterus. When this is done, the results are a bit unpredictable as there is likely to be a considerable change in the woman's hormonal balance. The source of all her estrogen and the principal source of most of her testosterone is removed. She will still have testosterone being produced by her adrenals and this may shift her hormonal balance so that it is very much more like that of a male. In order to keep her hormonal balance more like that of a female it is usual to prescribe hormone replacement therapy -- this will go a long way to preventing facial hair growth, deepening of the voice etc., but it may take a little bit of experimentation to get the dosage right.

People refer to a hysterectomy as any operation that a woman has on her reproductive organs, but actually there are different surgeries. All or part of her reproductive organs could be removed. Sometimes it is done through an incision in the abdomen and sometimes through the vagina.

What your mother is hearing is probably in reference to women who have had their ovaries removed. With removal of the ovaries you automatically are in menopause. And menopause can cause women to have mood swings.

Your mother's physician will determine if they are taking out her ovaries, if she will be put on hormone replacement therapy or HRT. Artificial hormones help with the mood swings and hot flashes, but not every woman can take them.

If your mother trusts her doctor, then she shouldn't worry. If she has any questions she should ask her doctor. If they are a good doctor they will take their time and explain to your mother all that she needs to know in a manner that she is able to understand.

All the best to your mother.

no, for me it was not worst than having a baby. if she takes her prescribed hormones as directed she will not be emotional/irritable. if you are experiencing problems, ailments, and/or surgeries. the best thing for you to do is to research it to death. you then should be an expert. if you truly care about your well being then do the research. don't depend on others to tell you how to live a life after a hysterectomy, have the information prior to the surgery. know what you are getting into and what to expect after the surgery.

That's an old wives tale. She will be going into early menopause,so she will be experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and depression.Just remember some go through all of the symptoms and some don't even experience any of them. All women are different. She's going to be fine, because she has a daughter that cares.Take care.

My grandma had a complete hysterectomy several years ago, and she is doing just great! She never talked to me about the pain, but she is as sweet as ever and she is not "crazy" at all.

Yes. A radical hysterectomy includes the ovaries, but if she had ovarian cancer before they were removed, she can still have a recurrence of that cancer in the pelvis, and it would still technically be ovarian cancer. Also, she may have had a modified radical hysterectomy that did not include the ovaries; either way, it is possible.
