the hay that i have is not all alfalfa but i just wasn't sure if it was first cutting was better or second cutting?

The first cutting is definitely the best, the second cuttings it is trying to go to seed and puts it's energy into the seeds giving less energy to the hay, given time it is like straw---nothing

The first cut is the richest. By the second cut a lot of weeds have accumulated in the fields. It all depends on your horse though. If you just have a ol' pleasure horse that doesn't get a lot of exercise give him the second cut or even better, just grass hay.

First cut is. We always kept our first cut for the horses. They like and need the parts that have the seedheads intact. The second cut don't develop the tops like the first cut. It should also be cut before the seedheads burst open.

We don't feed alfalfa. Legumes promote more problems then they solve. We feed good leafy grass hays.
