First, you need to cut out any area that is damaged. That type of hole always has more damage than you see at first.
They make special clips that are used to fasten patches to drywall. With the clip, you kind of glue the replacement piece in with drywall compound. I use a product called Durabond. It is many times stronger than regular compound plus it drys much faster.
You will need to go over the patch several times to build up the compound. Sand it down each time to make it flush. It should be very flush, any holes or bumps will show up after painting.
When you are satisfied, prime it before painting.

EASY, I've kicked a hole in my wall before. Cost no more than $10-15. This will work for small holes, and if you can stick some newspaper in the hole and not fall in. My hole was near the molding on the floor, so it worked very well. This takes less than an hour. you don't need all the fancy wood blocks and cut more small holes in your wall.
All you'll need some ISULATION FOAM (yellow foam in a can) , NEWSPAPER (for foam support), and some DRYWALL COMPOUND mixture (go to homedepot and ask; it comes in a small box its just powder--mix it with water and you're set) and paint that matches your wall.
Or if you want you can use a piece of sheetrock cut to fit in the hole and use the drywall mix. I suggest the foam and newspaper because it is stable.
1. get enough newspaper and twist it and crumble it and stick it in the hole--not protruding out of hole, it needs to be inplace to keep the foam stable.
2. spray the foam in and let it rest. It will turn hard and stick out of the wall. Cut off the excess foam until flush with wall.
3. use the drywall paste mixture and spread it evenly on the wall.
4. When it dries, sand it a little, then apply paint.
Tip: if you want the paint to look natural, use the tip of the paint brush and poke the wall. Do not go up and down with brush. Poke the wall with the paintbrush so the paint forms little bumps.

It sounds like you are describing a hole in sheet-rock. We had a hole like that when the doorknob did it (before we put a doorstop in for protection).
1- Make a small hole over the top (about 1 in from the edge of the hole). Do the same at the bottom and sides.
2- Get two pieces of wood lathing (soft wood used for behind plaster) or other wood strip, plywood etc.
3- Start a screw into the strip (sheet-rock screw) you will need 4.
4- Remove the screw, tuck the strip into the hole and line up the screw hole with the top hole screw it in snug and line up that strip with one of the side holes and put in the 2nd screw.
5- Do the same with the other strip.
6- Your hole should have both pieces of wood in view.
7- Cut a patch of cardboard that will fit inside the hole and up against the wood strips. You can secure it with a staple gun or super glue carpet tacks or something else to hold the cardboard in place.
8- With can of ready mixed spackling compound put in a thin layer the size of the hole and let it dry. (The thinner the layer the faster it will dry).
9- Repeat until the hole is patched. Then remove the 4 screws and patch the small holes, When dry, sandpaper then paint.
I have seen this done with screening or many other materials to provide a backing for the hole which can then be filled.
Good Luck, take your time and do a good job ! !

Square hole where a medicine cabinet used to be? It'll take a handyman 2 -3 trips for the finishing and texture match so will charge anywhere from $75 -150. If you may be considering having some painting done later, then hang a picture over it and have that done then. The cost will be much less since there's no trips involved.

First off quit punching holes in the wall. Now go to the hardware store and get a patch kit. They will be able to help you. It should contain a square piece of drywall and some metal anchors. You will also need some drywall tape and plaster to cover. Sand, prime and paint.

depending on what type of wall, it would take a two fisted sheet rocker, or two fisted mason, but anyway, get a rag some cardboard and just generally stuff it up with rags cardboard, and then, or a piece of wood and put plaster on it,not much really, i have used this method several times and found it to be satisfactory

the hardware store sells adhesive patches, just get one that is the appropriate size, and stick it on. Then you will need some dry wall compound that you just spread on evenly, let dry, sand, and paint.
