Probably the roller belt. But have you seen the cat lately?

When things get caught, the roller stops but the motor keeps running. The smell is the motor and the belt trying to turn the roller. Stop the vacuum and remove whatever is caught before your burn up the motor.

There is probably a belt that is attached to the roller on most units. This belt must be changed once in a while and it sounds like it is now week. The belt will continue to roll when the object is blocking the roller from turning that is what is causing the burning smell it is your belt that is burning.

you are burning the rubber drive belt to the beater bar. when you get something caught that stops the beater bar (rotary bush) in the vacuum head -- the drive motor and rubber drive belt just keep on spinning -- the heat generated by the friction of the belt spinning over the stuck beater bar shaft starts to burn the belt -- thus the burning rubber odor.
