people here seem to not understand what the word humane means. glue traps are in no way humane.
eliminate any food source. try and find out where they are coming in so u can block the hole. check under your sink for holes. they have hav- a-hart traps which catch them so u can take them down the street to the woods somewhere instead of killing them. u set one when u go to bed & check immediately the next morning. make sure theyre closed when not in use. if u just kill them which is mean, others will still keep coming back. u have to find their entrance and block it. if its an odd shape steel wool will work.
usually strong scents such as cayenne pepper, moth balls, or peppermint extract will work because they hate the smell. a new product called fresh cab works too and it's all-natural.

They supposedly don't like the smell of peppermint. I tried the peppermint essential oil on a cotton ball but I can't claim that it worked for sure because I might have trapped them. I have a new herd in my garage and will be trying it again. A friend of mine said to try putting Bounce sheets (the fabric softener) around because they hate the smell and that has worked for her. Mice can go through cracks and holes as small as a pencil eraser tip, so they can come through any small opening. But I'd try getting them out of the attic because the next place they'll be heading is your flat looking for food. Your cat will be a great tool. It may not be humane for the mouse, but mice are dirty and carry disease. You need to get rid of the mice that come into your flat, letting your cat do it's thing or with a snap trap with peanut butter. Mice are creatures of habit so if you capture one and let it go, it will be back (unless you give it a swim). So think of yourself first.

I've had great success with this trap in my house:
http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266
I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:
http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp
If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. Also, if you use the live traps outside, put a little bedding (paper towels or cotton balls) inside the trap so the mice won't freeze to death during the night. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. If you are a kind person, you might also leave a little bird seed or oatmeal for them.
The absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die.
Good luck!

I don't think there really is a humane way. However, I noticed that after I got cats, I stopped getting field mice (I live right by railroad tracks). Maybe the mice can tell there's a predator in the house?

Cats and poison are the most inhumane ways to kill something--both are painful and drawn-out. The most humane way to KILL is by snapping its neck. But I don't think our asker wants to kill the mice.
Go to the peta website.
Also, put all of your food into sturdy rubber/plastic or glass containers. Mice will chew through cardboard and the flimsy plastic store-wrappings. Make sure there is a lid on your garbage. Clean your kitchen and dining areas daily. Depending on your area, simply eliminating the food supply could be enough for the mice to decide to move on to more fertile feeding grounds.

The only humane way is to use a live trap, They sell tghem at home depot, It's metal cage. You bait the ionside with a good quality peanut butter, nothing old and rancid. The mice walk in the trap, it flips them into a compartment, You simply take the trap out side, and let the little bastards go! If you don't seal your house up. You will have a forever job!

Yeah, they are so cute and they also carry many diseases that can be deadly for humans.
Wild mice are considered vermin because they carry infectious diseases.
Best thing to do is get rid of them as quickly as possible by what ever means possible.
Better to worry more about the safty of your family rather than the poor little mice.

I bought these little gray traps that humanely captured the mouse when they went in for a snack. I think it was their own weight that pulled the door down. Ironically, I used cat food and it worked. ( Yes I have a cat but he is worthless. You can have him if you would like ). I let the mouse go outside. A couple days later he was back and a little pissed off. He chewed through a phone cord that I had running through the wall. I caught him again. This time I brought the mouse about 200 yards away and tossed him over a snow bank. He didn't come back after that. The lesson here is: If you catch him, release him very far away or he will be back.

If you do not want to injure the mouse they make traps which do not harm them, for example the "have-a-heart traps. Once they are trapped you can take them somewhere and let them go. Try Froogle, it will bring up some options.
If this is not your style then I would go with a standard mouse trap. This device will end the mouse more quickly than will a cat or poison.
Good luck.
