What does NTSC version mean in reference to a DVD?

I want to order a Foreign film DVD and it says that U.S. orders will be the NTSC version. Does anyone know what that means?

DVDs are coded in different regions so they will only play on that regions dvd players. US and Canada are Region 1. This slows down pirating because we cannot watch dvds purchased in Japan, or Britian, etc. NTSC will work on Region 1 dvd players like the ones sold in US and Canada.
