Wow. Good question. That's really an opinion answer, but I think slavery slowed down the progress of America and was a tragedy.

Well, without slavery, there wouldn't be very many black people in America today. The only ones here would be the ones that emigrated here.

Slave owners/traders thought of black people as pets, laborers, and property. Even after the Civil War ended, there were a lot of people that didn't think of blacks as equals. If equality were something that had been accepted, we wouldn't have needed the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

However, slavery didn't hurt blacks as much as the things we've done to them since. Sure it brought them here and it was brutal, inhumane, etc., but so many things in America today keep oppression something that is silent, but still active.

I was reading a book recently where the author had a whole chapter about how the minimum wage and affirmative action hurt blacks.

The institution of minimum wage meant that companies didn't have to hire the most skilled workers, just pay them the same. This meant that the skilled positions that many blacks had were suddenly less valuable than they were previously.

Affirmative action and quotas created a lot of animosity toward blacks because whites saw these black people as "tokens" that had jobs that they wouldn't have had otherwise. In many cases that is true, and even though there is some opportunity, there isn't upward mobility in the corporate structure.

This isn't to say that businesses don't like blacks, but they don't like them getting into positions of power. This is why minority-owned businesses aren't the melting pot that America supposedly is. This is why there is a ***** College Fund, but not a Caucasian College Fund. This is why there is Black History month. The list goes on and on.

If you look at other countries, notably all over Europe, they don't have these things. And lookie, the blacks are equal to whites. They aren't discriminated against, and there isn't racial tension. We only have it good on paper.

A lot of people charge that a lot of blacks are on welfare. While a higher percentage of blacks are on welfare as compared to whites, there are a lot more white people on welfare, but if you think of a welfare mother, you don't likely think of a white person first.

There has been so much done to them and the system is self-perpetuating. It was easier for blacks to attain wealth prior to the Civil Rights Act than afterward. And think about this, for every law that is passed, there is opposition to it. JFK didn't want to take this on as his platform because it was too hot to handle during election season. So much for a compassionate American...

I would suggest that anyone reading this read "10 Things You Can't Say In America" by Larry Elder. It was the most enlightening thing I've read in years.

Interesting point. I am not sure. Some attitudes seem to have contributed to people's perception of the black people group.

Of course, culture from each people group apparently has a strong influence on this country: music, food, etc.

It seems that blacks are perceived to be a lower class than whites, typically. This is not always the case, and it seems to get better over time, but I think it has its roots in slavery.
