I've been giving some thought as to why many people complain about this country, or want to leave. There's a lot of reasons but one of them is, I think, that we don't have pride in being English. It's difficult to raise the English flag without being perceived as racist, and you can't tick a box on any forms to say that you are English (you are often White: Other). and political correctness and fear of being sued mean that common sense in justice and politics has gone out of the window.
We've been subsumed into Europe and European laws are stronger than our own and the Human Rights Act has given rise to many laughable and lunatic judgements.
Are you proud to be Engish? If so, why? And if you have lost pride in being English, what are your reasons?

You're not allowed to show pride as you say because you get accused of being racist amongst other things. You're not even allowed to call yourself English but only British if you're in England. The Scots, Welsh and Irish are allowed. This government more than any other has done more than Hitler in destroying the country once known as England and people living here once known as English (regardless of their earlier origins). I havent lost pride and I wont be silenced either. Many I know feel resigned.

What! People aren't proud of being English? Didn't you guys invent Turkish Delight?

If for that alone, not to mention the ending of thugyism in India and slavery in Africa, any Englishman should be walking around with a barrel chest.

I heard somewhere its considered really awful for an English politician to speak with the British flag behind him.

If I were English I'd raise the Union Jack wherever and however I liked, as long as it was respectful. I'd also commit murder over football.

EDIT. For the girl below me...England ENDED slavery in Africa by comendeering any slave ships it founf on the sea and embargoed the whole coast to prevent slaves from leaving.

There are many people that don't know how good we have it in this country. We are more prosperous and have more leisure time than ever, and I think these factors are allowing people to get slack, mentally lazy if you like. Because (almost) everyone has money (if you can afford a television you can't be destitute), there appears to be less incentive to work hard, to bring your kids up well and to generally be nice people, as material wealth is perceived as all-satisfying in some sections of society.

This general malaise also causes ignorance, resulting in a lack of understanding of other cultures, a simple-minded belief that every bad thing is the fault of the government of the time as opposed to the culmination of many years of policy of many different politicians, leading to poor turn-out and bad democracy.

People need to be taught to think, and to appreciate how good this place actually is, and not to blame the first person they meet on the street that looks a bit different from them.

I think the English are very patriotic. I often moan about the weather, food, people and the government but I'm still proud of the country. I wont hear a bad word said about England from anybody else. I hate it when I'm in my local gym which has loads of Australians and New Zealanders moaning about something or other. If you hate it so much, why are you here? I was born here and my mother was born in Trinidad but has a British passport. We both supported England when they played Trinidad & Tobago in the World Cup.

PRIDE? Perhaps it has to begin at the beginning!? Children are brought up with no consequences, no respect, they can do what they like at home, school, steal from shops, they know how to ask for a "Brief" for heavens sake.

They tip litter everywhere, they watch terrible cartoons and programmes that make out Adults to idiots. The move on to graffiti and I guess see the TV char actors real or cartoon the correct way to act.

They do not learn any social skills as they are always in front of a screen, no I am not proud to be British, there is a generation of ASBOS on the horizon.

We are not allowed to display a flag unless its a holiday, they are in America, nearly everyone has one in the yard, good for them I say. Everything is being changed for the WHO s sake? Traditions are blotted out. For fear of offence, for goodness sake - wake up and smell the coffee GB before we loose our identity entirely. When in Rome!!!

And to all those parents out there, get your acts together now!
Before it too late. Your children show no respect for you, the neighbours, the country, and sadly for themselves

. (I feel better for that, thank you for your question!)

I think England has a lot to be proud of. I am English by nationality but of Nigerian stock and I am glad to have been raised here.In doing so Ihave been able to take advantage that of the liberty and life chances that living here has been able to afford me. Everyone should have the right to appreciate their own culture , after all they would know what is best about it.I f other peole are offended by the culture of their host country , maybe they shouldn't live their in the first place. Immigration is a two way process , you have to accept immigrants differences, they have to accept new morms , like learning the lingua franca of their new home. nts are differe nt, but they have to accept

I Think it`s because we don`t appreciate how lucky we are.Life here has been good for so long (and it`s very good compared to a lot of places )we take it for granted and keep expecting better .When things don`t progress at the speed people want theyre impatient and because they don`t want to accept thats the way it is they blame it on every thing but themself .I think the bottom line of it is we have got too selfish and greedy for our own good
Maybe if we spent a bit more time apreciating what we do have and less time moaning we might fell a bit happier

An interesting question. Your comments don't apply just to England. I live in Dublin in Ireland & we have similar problems here. I think part of the problem is that we don't have self respect, to begin with. If we don't respect & value ourselves, then we won't value other people, other peoples' property or law & order. Discipline & family values are fading & lawlessness is the result. I agree with your comments about Brussels taking over - we are losing our identity. Personally I am proud to be Irish, but I feel that Ireland has lost many if its traditional values in our search for material wealth & in our eagerness to be 'European'. Political correctness is being taken too far. In my view if people choose to emmigrate to Ireland (or England) then they should accept our beliefs & culture (while retaining their own.)

You are right and this is why a record number of people leave this county and why they are importing new people. My reasons why im starting to hate this country are that we workers are overtaxed, underpaid, overtaxing on cars(tolls and congestion costs) and fuel, high insurance rates, car and enviroment damaging road humps everywhere, speed cameras everywhere, gas and electricity rip off, houses cost too much you cant afford one, over crowded prisons and inmates live in comfort with free tv, police dont give a toss because they are too busy with the high crime rates, high immigration and they get priority to houses, heath and safety and political correction going too far you cant do anything.

i personally would rather be somewhere else. tony Blair sucks because he lies all the time, and all he cares about is war not education and all that other stuff he said. i also don't like that fact that the British are being pushed out of their country by foreigners! the news is mostly taken up by foreigners - for example bombings. i personally would like to be with the other half of my family in America than be stuck in this crappy place (England)!
