Odds are that it never will. The "formula" for making CDs and DVDs are both patented by Sony. All other companies that produce disc do so using their own formula for putting the magnetic media onto the plastic disc. It is a little different (because each company patenets its own process). So many CD and DVD players are unable to read some brands of CD/DVD. Not much you can do about it.

Also, if it is a "homemade" DVD, the head of the burner that made the disc may be a hair off-center (say to the right). If your player is a hair off-center to the left, it may not be able to read DVDs from the other burner. Burners that are on-center, or off the same way, can read them. (There is no way to "center" your read head).

Finally, check your burner, because there are two different formats (ways in which files are written) on to DVDs. They are DVD+R and DVD-R. While most good burners today can read both, many cheaper burners can only read -R or +R, noth both.
