If you want free postcards which you can send (i.e. already printed) you can go to cinemas and other recreational outlets - they often have stands with free postcards that are promoting certain products.
If you need free postcards printed for yourself: try www.vistaprint.co.uk (I think they have a US branch as well) They will print for free, but put their add on the back.

1)take any old piece of cardboard /cardstock / even a heavier paper and cut to desired shape
2)doodle a design/ paste on a picture/ apply stickers on one side (optional)
3) write the note on the flipside of the paper

try the big cinemas.when i used to stay with m,y friend in nottingham we used to go and they would have stands where you could help yourself.
also some big art galleries like the national and tate sometimes have free supply
