I have this book (see link) it is an absolute beginners manual. I will start you off building a few simple shapes and a model of the solar system for example. The book will gide you in performing some simple animation.

I find the Maya interface is complex as its menus change depending on the function you are performing. I found doing some simple projects like what in this book very helpful in getting familiar with the IDE

Depends on your background and what applications you have previous used. If you have experience with like minded software you should not have a problem exploring Maya. I would suggest getting use to the quick keys as it will make things easier for you later.

If you are starting fresh and have not used like minded software, I would suggest looking into picking up a book like a Sams Teach Yourself book, they are easy to follow and helpful. What you most likely need is to get the basics out of the way and to get yourself off the ground after that.

Good Luck.
