check out www.amaranthgames.com, they made the game Aveyond, and feature the prequel, whichis free. Also, do a search for Laxius Power, those are great free games as well. All of these games were created using the basic RPG maker engine.

Home of the Underdogs and any abandonware site will have tons (HOTU is the best of these sites). Look for any of the Ultima series (you will need a free program called MoSlo to run them on your compy as they are very old and dos-run).
Also, Kingdom of Loathing is an online gaming engine that is HUGELY addictive and really hilarious.

Try out knight online, it's free( though you can subscribe for better features), but keep in mind that it takes a whole day to download but it'll be worth it

if you want to try old stuff yeah.. go to www.dosgames.com some kids get a kick out of it. I've been a gamer since they first came out duke nukem, doom, wolfensen etc
