On 4 April 1968 he was standing on the balcony of his hotel room at the Lorraine Hotel (now the National Civil Rights Museum) in Memphis, TN when James Earl Ray shot him with a Remington 760 slide-action deer rifle in 30-06 caliber with a Redfield 2-7x scope.
