I can only judge the tertiary education system, as I am a professor and have studied at two American universities, a Canadian one, a British one, and a German one, and taught at a German one, two British ones, and one in New Zealand.
The weaknesses I have seen are that academic staff get low pay and have low esteem and prestige, which attracts not so fabulous people to teach (good people tend to go into industry instead, it seems to me). Consequentially, especially bachelor level education seems unprofessional and trivial on the academic and industry-relevant skills level, especially compared to Germany. Another weakness is the dependency of American universities on tuition fees. In Europe, most of the education is state funded up to 100%, leaving students with no fees to pay, or very little. When there are few students, American universities can cling to even bad ones to make sure they get their money, whereas European universities will mercilessly fail whoever doesn't meet the standard, even if it means that half of the initial students must go. This helps ensure graduate quality, you see, even if it's harsh.
Another thing is safety on campus. But that is probably a cultural thing. Guns on campus are unheard of in the rest of the Western world, but where I studied in the US, every fifth student came armed, with a gun in their backpacks or glove compartment. If I had known that, I would not have come to the US to study.

Thank you for asking this question. I hope this has been of a little use to you. This Yahoo Answers is an amazing way of exchanging information.

And good luck to you!

The number one problem: There is no unity amongst the school systems. The cirriculum varies from dsitrict to district, and from state to state. The rich schools get more money, and the poor schools get less. The students are being shortchanged in the process. Another problem: while we have pleanty of funds and systems set up for disadvantaged or handicapped children, there are none for those who are over achievers. There are many children who score far above their grade levels, but are forced to remain with their class. Most students excell in one area over another (a 12-year-old girl might score at a high school sophomore reading level, but at a sixth grade math level) Even if she were pushed up a grade, that wouldn't help her math scores. I think the whole system should be thrown out and we should start from scratch, we are working with a system developed several decades ago, before computers and television, before Baby Einstein and Dora the Explorer. We need to make our school system reflect society.

The American Education System

Bad:

Woefully underfunded (low pay, substandard/unusable supplies)

Violence (gangs/beatings/weapons/etc.)

Class sizes too large

Inept instructors/teachers are kept on because of seniority (a BIG problem at my school!).

Postsecondary students who drop out of school because of financial/family issues (again, access and promotion in postsecondary institutions SHOULD be based upon academic achievement, NOT whether or not the student has to chose between feeding their family or paying for tuition/texts).

Good:

Freedom of opportunity (Everyone has the CHANCE to earn an education)

We (public k12 schools) serve everyone to the best of our abilities; regardless of race ethnicity, family income, etc.

Financial Aid is available for postsecondary students

Everyone has the chance for a university education (unlike what the professor stated above, Americans are pretty much in charge of their OWN destinies, and most of the unqualified drop out by their second year (poor grades/partying excesses, etc.).

Asian Educations is much better then American preparation. Asians are way forward in analyze. They dont have a mind-blowing way of coaching yet they are truly forward. Educations is venerated in Asia. everybody has to pay to recieve preparation. scholars dont have the final to declare or do something agianst instructors. they are truly respectful and tricky!
