Zaba search is really helpful but there are also other ways... I don't know where you live but in my county, the County Clerk's Office has an online searchable database. They have marriage records, property records and such. A lot of times the person's address is also on the doc. The marriage records are real helpful if it is a female friend that might have changed her name due to marriage.
Also, go to Yahoo white pages. Oh, and though Intellius (sp?) charges for a full look up they do give this free look up which contains helpful info.
