Depends on the university. At my university (Roehampton) they mark in percentages and your overall grade is the average of the grades from years 2 and 3, but they don't count your lowest 15 credits. To get a 1st you need to have over 70%.

At my husbands uni they used a different system where students were graded from 1 (high) to 14 (low) and the classification was based on how many 1-3 grades or 4-7 grades and so on that they got per year, really complicated!

I got all 'A's or 'A+' in the first year, mostly 'A's in the second and third, a couple of 'B's and one C. My average was over 70% I think. And I didnt get a first. In fact only 2 people out of a class of over 200 got firsts. dont know the exact percentage but its high and its not easy. I think it might vary as well according to what subject you do.

At my uni (Southampton) it was 70% or over for humanities related subjects. If you were extremely borderline (e.g. 69.5%) i was told they might consider putting the final grade up to a 1st. Different unis have different systems for calculating your average (mean, median, mode etc) so check with your tutor.
