Quotas don't.
Threats, berating, yelling don't.
Competition doesn't generally motivate me.
What motivates me most is the sense that I am doing something valuable, that I and my work are respected, and that there is the support to help me if I hit a snag without putdowns or suspicion that I'm not trying.
