The girl in the hospital's face was so messed up and swollen that they couldn't recognize her and I believe something of the other girls (her purse or phone maybe) was found near the girl in the hospital so they thought she was the other one. Also the girls did resemble eachother.

To add to what the original person who responded said, I think that as the girl who survived came out of her coma, she started to say things that did not make sense to her 'family'. Of course they at first thought that she was delusional as a result of her injury...then they realized the mistake.
Both families handled the incident with courage and class.
The mother (might have been the sister) had a web diary where she documented the progress of her sister/daughter and one of the finaly entries was where she realized the mistake and the gave the other family some nice words and prayers and just showed that they were a real class act!
I do believe that the survior was released from the hospital and was taking classes at the college she was enrolled in.
