Is there a gang named Cryptic?

Not that I know of... perhaps you're thinking of the Crips, which started out as a big-city gang and has affiliated smaller gangs all over the place. I was told they were called the Crips because they liked to beat people severely, or cripple them, but Wikipedia (take it or leave it) has other theories.
