technically yes, a 4x4 is classed by being able to deliver engine power to all four wheels, just having 4 wheels doesnt make it a 4x4. though where the seperation comes in is between awd ( all wheel drive ) which has a single gear range in the transfer case (4-hi only) versus a full 4 wheel drive. a full 4 wheel drive will have 2 ( sometimes more but rarely ) drive ranges on its transfer case ( 4 hi/4 low ). trucks and real suv's tend to have a 2 speed case, where as car based has the single speed. this is generally done because a truck or suv will be used to pull heavy loads,or push loads ( like a snowplow ) where as a crv and cute-utes like it will never do this type of work because it isnt designed for it.

As far as I know, 4x4 means four wheel drive, which is the same as all wheel drive, unless you have more than 4 wheels. LOL. The only difference is most all wheel drive cars don't have the capability of off-road driving, because they're too low to the ground. 4x4 vehicles are usually SUV's or trucks, and are much higher off the road. But the answer to your question is technically yes. The all wheel drive cars are 4x4's.

All wheel drive is technically not the same as 4x4. In an all wheel drive car you have a center differential splitting power to the front and rear, instead of a transfer case. Yes, all four wheels are getting torque, but it is an open system designed for street manners. In a true 4x4 you have a transfer case that is either full-time or part-time, and has Hi and Lo ranges for four wheel drive. It's this manual control of sending power evenly to the front and rear without a center diff that makes it a true 4x4.

No, these terms have different meaning in the automotive industry. A vehicle that can selectively use four wheels to drive or only two wheels to drive the vehicle is a four-wheel drive or 4x4, while a vehicle that always uses all wheels to drive the vehicle is an all-wheel drive.

Four-wheel drive cars often have a low-range transfer case and other features making them adept at high torque tasks, such as towing or rock climbing, and are often truck-like vehicles. All-wheel drive is not uncommon on street vehicles ranging from sport utility vehicles to exotic sports cars such as the Porsche 959 and sedans such as the BMW 3 series and many Audi vehicles.

NO NOT AT ALL!!!!

I had a jaguar - and that was all wheel drive. But believe me, it wouldn't go were a 4x4 could go.

The only vehicle that you can consider a 4x4 is the ones that has that 4x4 button or that xtra gears that says Low range and High range.

Please do not under any circumstance drive with a all wheel car on a road that is made for a 4x4!

All wheel drive cars have all wheels working all the time. A 4x4 is usually a rear wheel drive and you engage all four wheels when you want them. So yes AWD cars are 4wd cars with less parts and some better benefits.

AllWheelDrive refers to cars which drive 4 wheels all the time. So not all 4x4 are all AWD but all AWD are 4x4 (or 4WD).
But this is not a strict formula. It is subject to Chryslers marketing department;-)
