I'm crocheting blankets to give to local nurseing homes and hospitals but I'm running low on funds any ideas on where to find free yarn or very discounted prices to help me keep giving to these places?

If you have one in your area, I would try first Hobby Lobby.
(They have a staunchly Christian corporate culture and a properly phrased request of this type should fall on symapthetic ears.)
Do you have a 501(c)3 organization that can accept charitable donations for tax purposes? If so, I might have some additional suggestions. If not, you need to consider approaching one of your local senior-care charities about taking on your project.
Edit: Below is a pretty good suggestion. If you don't have a charitable organization backing you, reaching out to one or more local churches is an excellent idea. (It would help to start with a church where you are known, or have friends, but don't hesitate to ask others. A good church can put denominational differences aside pretty quickly when it's clear that the cause is a good one.)

You might want to approach a few craft stores and ask if they'd like to donate yarn. In return, you could offer to make flyers to go with the blankets saying that the yarn was donated by that particular store. It would be good publicity for them because a lot of old people knit and crotcheting.

Hobby Lobby is probably a great place; also, they sell pounds of acrylic yarn there for usually a few bucks, and I've never paid more than a dollar for a skein of Red Heart Super Saver there. I don't often buy acrylic, but if I do, that's normally where I go.

Contact the local churches...ask if you can put a request in their bulletin. Also, tell the workers at Good Will and Salvation Army...ask if they can let you know when yarn gets donated in.

You should check Yahoo groups - freecycle. It is group that is open to all who want to recycle that special something rather than throw it away. Freecycle is city specific - you can check to see if there is one in your area by checking this site: http://freecycle.org/
You may also want to check craigslist.com as well.
