Yes, I had the same problem after living in a dorm for 4 years in college. My family never cursed but I picked it up in college. It is a very hard habit to break but well worth the effort. I found being around people who do not curse helped me the most. The kind of people you hang around has a huge influence on you. Try learning some new words, maybe one or two new words a week and focus on using them in conversations. Imagine yourself in a diplomatic situation where you absolutely could not curse and try to speak a whole day without a curse word as if you were showing a diplomat from a foreign country what your country is like.

I admire your desire to change your vocabulary. You will be very glad you did. Happy New Year and best wishes to you.

Try to replace these words with cleaner alternatives. Don't change friends or anything but hang around some cleaner people sometimes and you'll find yourself adopting their speech patterns. Try to be conscious of everything your saying. You might want to try having a rubber band or hair tie on your wrist and pop yourself anytime you say a curse word or bite your lip or some other small self-punishment (note that I'm not supporting self-mutilation or anything serious...just a small punishment). Also don't give up! It'll take awhile to change and the occasional slip up even if you do change is to be expected. So remember to not give up and not to be too hard on yourself. Good luck!!

Make yourself do something you don't like everytime you catch yourself saying it. Like a curse jar or something, put a dime in it everytime you curse. The key is you can't keep the money, give it to a church or charity or your kids if you have kids.
Keep a lemon or some seriously hot or sour candy handy, you could take a bite of something like that everytime you catch yourself....you will eventually start catching yourself before you say the "bad word" and begin to stop.
The key to changing a habit is consequences!

Get a thysaurus. Open up the dictionary and try learning new words. Most people curse because they don't know what else to say when they are mad. The thysaurus will give you alternative words to use. Make sure you practice them alone first though.

I feel you, darlin'. I picked up a lot of foul language from my mom too! Eventually I got sick of my mouth, because I didn't want to use that language, but it was a habit (and a hard one to break at that). What I do now is say little expressions that only mean something to me. For example (I got this one from a Dane Cook sketch), I say "Son of a batch of cookies!", "Duck!", and "What the frapp?" I firmly believe that vulgar language degrades the listener and speaker.

Hope I helped!

Sounds like you've already received some great responses.

I just want to compliment you on realizing you were cursing too much. In this day and age of public cursing, I find this refreshing.

Thank you.

A friends grandmother got tired of us using certain words in her house. She sat up a jar and everytime we used a word she would have us put a quarter in the jar it got expensive but was on the honor policy it just made you more aware. I wonder what she did with that money prob replenished the groceries teenage boys eat.

I would ask all your friends to tell you you are annoying (or something of that sort) every time you curse. Or if that doesn't work (they might curse too and not care if you do), maybe you should award yourself for when you don't curse.

It'll come naturally, every time you swear just tell yourself off and you know, after a while you'll stop. I decided not to swear a few years ago (it's just not ladylike!) and I still get a few curses popping out but not half as much as I used to.
