ok guys ive had a couple of posts but got messy. Details -

hot water seems to be ok but my heating isnt working. upstairs radiators are "warm" , downstairs cold. its an old boiler 15-20 years.

what ive done -

-ive checked the expansion tank in loft and filled it to just below the overflow pipe(some people tell me this ok other said should only be half full
-bleed all radiators
-checked that valve connected to expantion tank is at full on.

other info -

- on same pipe as expansion tank valve is a tap head, unsure if i should so anything with this???
-boiler is sounding like its doing something but the pilot light comes on for about 10 secs, during this boiler getts louder and you hear gushing water in pipes, then goes off for about 1-2min, then this cycle continues to happen and im not sure if this is relevent.
- ive been advised to check pump but idea where this is or what to do with it.

Soo all ideas and suggestions welcome as its freezing in here :o

I had this trouble and turned out it was the motorised valve near the pump wasn't switching on properly. My uncle is a retired gas fitter and he says that a new valve should be aout £50 plus labour.

From what you say I would thing your central heating pump is not working well. Your pump can be in two places, either in the airing cupboard or near the boiler. If you can find it , get a screwdriver , switch the boiler on and use the screwdriver like a stethoscope and see if you can hear the pump going. It should vibraye through the screwdriver. If you don't hear anything, then the pump is the problem. As for the expansion tank, you only need about 4 inches of water in it. it only tops up the central heating system. it does not do the hot tap water.

If you can hear the pump, and the boiler is firing initially, it sounds like the water has nowhere to go, and the boiler it cutting out on the boiler stat and cycling via the bypass! i.e. The motorised valve is not opening? However IF wired correctly, the boiler and pump should not run until the valve is fully open.

sounds like air in the system has knackered the pump. if its a combi the pump will be inside the boiler. get a corgi registered engineer to have a look, no good messing with it yourself if you dunno what you're looking for. the reason it knocks straight off is cause if the pumps jiggered then the heat wont get away from the boiler so the boiler will act as though the system is up to temperature

99.9% sure your pump is not working, its possible that it is just seized, if you can gain access to the pump. at the end of the motor side. is i screw cap. take this off with a wide screw driver. u can then turn the shaft of the motor with a wide screwdriver. if free your pump is probably burnt out
