First thing you need to do is look at the bill again to see if it says Thermocouple, or Thermocoupler. If it is written as Thermocoupler than the person that installed it was not legitimate. It is Thermocouple…. No r on the end and only people that don’t know what they are talking about call it a Thermocoupler.

Now, as for the price you say you were charged for the Thermocouple. You have not provided enough information to make a good call. If you were in fact charged this amount for the part alone, then yes, you were drastically overcharged. You say “heater” in your question, which leaves much room for interpretation in my book. I have seen some direct vent space heaters that require near complete disassembly to replace the Thermocouple. A good heating tech. can spend a couple hours making this repair, and depending on your location labor fees could be quite high.

But again, without more information it’s a tough call. The standard service call up in my neck of the woods is from 75 to 95 bucks. That would cover the first half hour that the Tech. was there and in most cases that is more than enough time to diagnose and replace a thermocouple. As far as the Thermocouple itself 10 to 20 bucks would be average. If it was perhaps a Thermopile, that would double to 20 to 40 bucks.

For someone to make a broad statement that all thermocouples can be replaced on all appliances by the homeowner is dead wrong.

The part itself is under $10.00 at Home Depot, well at least in California that is all. As a licensed plumber I would not charge any more than $25.00 for the installation which takes no more than 15 minutes.
The installation is very easy and can be preformed by most home owners. That is probably why I charge so much.
All that you need is a screwdriver and a small ( 6 inch ) adjustable wrench.
Good Luck

I usually have to pay in the $25 USD range for the part. Maybe as low as $15 or as high as $30. It depends on the unit. Labor should be their minimum charge, this is a quick job in most cases.

P.S. You just added a critical piece of information. Call a few other repair people in your area to get a ballpark idea. Unless there is more to it, you were totally ripped off.

A PLUMBER WITH A CONSCIENCE WILL CHARGE LESS THAN $100.00.
