I think the director left the end ambiguous on purpose. But I felt the same way as you when I got to the end - what exactly is he trying to say? Perhaps the main character got a second chance after all, and the director is saying that there was some chance for redemption/hope by the end of that final scene.
I loved this movie, too. Very subversive about our double standards and our attitudes toward violence in the US.

I'm having a hard time remembering it in detail, but it seems to me that, after all was said and done, the guy's family was prepared to take him back, despite the fact that things had been revealed about him that made them question his past.
Until Ed Harris came around and stirred up that hidden past, Viggo Mortensen's character really WAS the good guy that his family thought he was. He really HAD a commitment to being that kind of person, despite his violent past. And, the way I read the ending, his family was willing to rely on that commitment, and to go forward with him.

I saw this movie when it first came out, and I love the ending, it's not inconclusive at all if you understand what passes between Tom(Viggo Mortensen) and his wife when he takes his seat at the table. There's a scene in the beginning of the movie when Tom tells his wife the moment he knew she was in love with him, from the look in her eyes. At the end when she looks up from her plate and they lock eyes, it's the same look. Tom went home not knowing if he would be forgiven and excepted by his family and that whole scene is about the fact that his family would rather be with him than without him, that they forgive him. When the little girl sets his place, and his son looks at him and then his wife, that is all about forgiveness.

I HATED the ending. It was so BLAH! I loved the whole movie cause it builds you up & it was so interesting and then as it slowly was coming down, it dropped? I was like, what happened to the rest of the movie? It was disappointing. Especially because I really liked the whole movie up to the end. All I got to say is, Joey was cool! I liked that he had a whole back story to him.

I thought it meant that the family were going to put that time behind them and move on with their lives.
