Studied this in college--I can't remember exactly if Circe suggested it--but Odysseus survives the Siren's song by having his crew securely lash him to the mast of the ship with ropes. That way he was able to continue to navigate the ship up until the song began to affect him. The crew blocked their ears with cotton wadding and were instructed by Odysseus to disregard anything beyond the ship's boundries.

Circe told him to have his men tie him to the mast and put wadding or cotton in their own ears. She also told him to instruct his men to not listen to his cries to turn the ship toward the island, no matter what he ordered.

I taught this a few times and Erick is correct. He had his crew tie him to the mast of the ship and asked them not to untie him no matter how much he begged. He then instructed them to put beeswax in their ears so they could not hear and he got to hear the song.
