If memory serves they refused to kill one of the pigs as a gift to the gods and were turned into pigs as a result. I think that the pigs that they ate belonged to one of the lesser deities but I'm a little fuzzy on that part.

Odysseus was spared because he refused to be part of the feast eventhough he was starving. (This is all going on memory so I could be really out to lunch =/)

the ship went over a waterfall and they were "eaten" by the creature in the ocean floor. (i think this creature was the ocean floor but i haven't read the books in so long
