assuming that bluray doesn't flop, in the war with HD, the way that beta did against VHS - a bluray player costs like 1000 dollars by itself (yes, sony loses money, like 200-300 for every ps3 they make)
assuming that bluray doesn't die out, the cost of a ps3 actually makes it a good buy. i know. hard to believe. but i don't have an extra 600 dollars laying around
however, i can't really understand why people would shell out 50 dollars for a movie on either bluray or HD, when today's world allows people movies for free, off the internet, and DVDs are getting cheaper, and coming out faster these days than ever beofre (to combat the internet thefts)

What something is worth depends on its value. If many people are willing to pay $600 for a PS3, then it obviously has such value and is therefore worth $600, at least to some who can afford it or wish they could afford it. If no one purchased a PS3 at that price, then it would not be worth it, thereby causing a reduction in value and therefore cost.
Specifically, the PS3's primary feature is the ability to play in high--definition. If the television upon which it is played is not HD capable, then the purchase would be a total waste of money.

The next-gen format war has just begun, but consumers are already starting to take notice. And one of the things they're noticing is the very high price of Blu-Ray players, which is actually good news for the status of the PS3...provided Blu-Ray either wins the war, or there's room for both BD and HD-DVD. A Best Buy price tag for an internal Blu-Ray drive is 749.99
But of course, let's all remember the PS3 still needs the killer software to be a success, outside of the format war. Just wanted to remind the fans that it is, in fact, a gaming machine and there are benefits to being a PS3 owner.

I don't think so.
I play online games (warcraft) but I just couldn't see paying that much for a system. That's almost 3 times the amount of my car payment.
Wait awhile the price will come down.

the ps3 is worth like close to 849.00-1000$ blu-ray is worth like 800 dollars and thats only one detail that the ps3 has built in. they lose money everytime they make one. but sony's master plan is to gain the lost money and more by selling games accessories, and online demos that cost.

It does contain a Blu-Ray Disc (HD) player in it and if you look at what the sell for you will get a better idea of it's worth.
I have no need for one so I don't think they are worth it.

I say.. no.
Sony loses money for each system they sell.
They try to make back money with games.
However, whenever we go to Best Buy, Target, etc., there are ALWAYS PS3's left over.
No one's buying them. Maybe you should wait for a better price or wait until better games come out.
(or settle for another console)
