You watch too much Peewee's Big Advanture! Ha ha! I loved that movie when it first came out and now, when it plays, I just have to watch it again!

Probably not. Most of the buildings built in those days were aboveground and 2 stories tall. Sometimes they were only 1 story tall, but had a false front so that it looked the same height as all the other buildings. If it did have a "basement", it most likely was a root cellar or something like that.
