Not true.
With battery technology evolving in the past 10 years that does not exist. Batteries that are in laptops, cordless power tools and cell phones are all made to be depleted and recharged many times over.

Watch for heat build-up. That is what is dangerous. Dell buys most of it's batteries from Sony, the people that make Exploding Batteries.
In general, an Ion battery like used in a laptop, should be used towared discharge now and then. The charger and charging circuitry is supposed to automatically regulate, so it does not charge when the battery has a full charge. It should be OK to leave your battery in the laptop at all times, but watch out for heat.
You can and should review the manual that came with the computer.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

I don't have a dell, but my wife's laptop battery is basically worthless (we need to keep it plugged in). I bought a macbook over a year ago and the battery is fine, although I do not keep it plugged in when using - I only have it plugged in when installing updates and the battery is low. If you get a new battery, don't leave the laptop plugged in when using it (kind of defeats the purpose) and only plug in when a charge is needed. Every laptop I've seen has a battery indicator to let you know how much power is left so if the battery is getting low and you're still working, then plug it in otherwise leave it unplugged.

Let me ponder that one. Hmmmm. OK I got it. NOOO. You can extend it by running the laptop off of the battery a lot and runing it into the low life remaining situation just to condition the battery. Keeping a laptop battery plugged in and hardly ever using the battery would surely kill it dead.

Nope, current laptops do not use the old Ni-cad batteries which have "memories" and should not remain plugged in for long periods of time. My currrent IBM even is smart enough to not fully charge itself (98% instead of 100%) to even better save itself.

ANy rechargeable bateries life can be reduced if you overcharge it. This is the same for laptops. To get the best life do't leave it charging for long periods suvh as overnight al the time
