Why do ant beds always pop up after a good rain?

The water soaking into the ground causes tunnels to collapse. So the ants need to quickly clean them out, carrying the excess to the top of the ground. This causes the "pop up" you are referring to.

I think rain brings nutrients up so insects come out. But I also read that some insects must come to the surface, or they will die.
