It depends on how the user has their account set up. Usually the only way to tell them you found their info useful is to leave it as a comment on your original question. Then, they can go back and read your comment if they want to. Sometimes, though, a user will accept email or im and you can contact them like that.

You can click on their avatar and see if they have email or IM or 360 to contact them. Or, when you select a Best Answer (after 4 hours but before 4 days), you can post a comment at that point (though many people will not return to see it, sorry). Or you can add a detail to your question before you close it saying that, but, again, most folks won't return to see it.
