I agree with the Pahlinuk guy (i also cannot spell), he's great.
I enjoy finding one author who is fairly prolific and reading all his/her books. Some authors I recommend aside from Pahlinuk are:
Vonnegut - great and classic stuff
Clive Cussler - very Bondish, turn your brain off type stuff
Nick Hornby - somewhat depressing, but very thoughtful stuff
Stephen Ambrose - very historical, very much an acquired taste, but very excellent writing and informative stuff
and my personal favorite these days:
Christopher Moore - Hilarious, somewhat insightful, crude, turn your brain off, quick read. just good all around if you are not easily offended. Personally i'd recommend starting with "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff" to get an idea of where he's coming from and then moving to the other books. Many of the same characters pop up in many of his books, so it feels like you're hanging out with old friends when you read his entire catalogue. Good stuff.

I'd suggest "Bloody Jack", "Curse of the Blue Tattoo", or "Under the Jolly Rodger"!! Of course that ALL depends on if you are okay with books about pirates and sailors and are okay with a few bad words and occasionally something gross.....I personally found them quite interesting <(^-^)>
