There is no front or back to a tree.
Only a compass direction.
IE: North side, South side, etc.

I have worked for a tree trimming service for 12 years. When describing a tree in someones yard to each other i.e. over the phone. We always consider the front to be facing the same direction as the front of the house.

The back of a tree faces the backyard, the front of the tree faces your front yard. Moss grows on the North side.

Yes, I was taught this nugget when I was working in an arboretum and was sent out to hang labels on the front of trees. "How do I know which is the front?" I asked. "If you were going for a pee, you'd go round the back of the tree" I was told.
It actually makes sense. Pick a tree and you instinctively know which side of it you'd pee. That's the back, I guess it's the least seen or least overlooked.

You can tell the front of the tree as it will be more dense with branches and leaves. This will invariably be facing the direction of the most available light through the day. It is also useful if you are lost in a forest to help determine which way is south.

Of course. The front of a tree is the side facing the East (direction in which the sun rises).

The only time this would be an issue is if you are planting it out from a pot. then it may be leafier on the side that faced the sun in the nursery, so you would orientate it the same way in the garden. Matters more with little plants though, a tree will grow to suit its situation in the garden.

I think the "front" of a tree would be that part that, when planted, faces what you consider to be the front of your property.

The front faces south, usually, to get the most sun. You will see the spread of leaves designed to do that. Then look at the back. The branches and leaves have to spread out a bit more to get some light.
