The downstairs heating unit is located in the garage, if we spray paint something or smoke a cigarette in the garage, anything... the whole house smells like it. I've tried taping up openings in the fresh air inlet, is this problem characteristic of the setup, or can it be fixed? We're renting and new to the house, and any advice would be greatly appreciated... thanks in advance.

Sorry, should have been more specific, the fresh air inlet comes from inside the house, but the duct work has to go through the garage, since the heater's out there. There were some tiny openings in that duct work where it could easily suck smells in w/ the air.

When you say you've taped up the fresh air inlet you mean in the garage? Typicaly the fresh air inlet is located in the house. Anyhow if it is is the garage it sounds like shody worksmanship. It would probably easier to pay a heating and air guy to fix this. All he would have to do is relocate the 'return air duct' into the house. If you do go this route do some research to find a reputable HVAC company. The installers may not have done a good job of sealing the furnace to the evaporator and base. Take a look, that may just require some tape. Hope this helps.

It sounds like you have an air return in your garage. In other words, a vent that sucks air and doesn't blow air out. That intake is then going to your furnace and circulated throughout the house. Take the intake vent and cover it up withsomething. Problem solved.
