a general theme in the human body is the substances in the body move form high to low pressure gradient ex: blood and in this case air.
lung tissue is elastic so that it can shrink and expand to change the pressure in the lungs. this is known as Boyle's Law, as the area increase (as the lungs expand) the pressure decreases. when this happens the atmospheric pressure is less then the lung pressure and the air will go in to the lungs a.k.a inhalation.
when the lungs contract the area decreases causing the pressure to raise about the atmospheric pressure and exhalation occurs

The structure of tissues depend upon the function of the organ it performs, as the lungs expand and contract the tissue are elastic in nature.

imagine this....that the lung is a whole bunch of itty bitty balloons... these balloons are called alvioli....there is a huge muscle in the abdomen called the diaphram...it contracts and creates a vacuum within the abdomen, causing the little balloons to expand and take in air....if the tissue that needs to expand were not elastic, then the first breath you took would break and tear the lung tissue....and you would drown in your own blood... but because the lung tissue is elastic... the little balloons in your lungs can expand, so that air can enter, and the oxygen in the air can combine with the hemoglobin in the blood, which once oxygenated, returns to the heart, to be pumped throughout the body, so that the cells of your body can breathe....the cells take in the oxygen, and release the product of "burning" the food you eat as carbon dioxide... the carbon dioxide is released back into the blood, and the heart pumps it back out to the lungs....when you breathe out,... the carbon dioxide is expelled, and the new air, with the oxygen you need, is taken in ....the elasticity of the lung cells makes it possible to breathe... just as the elasticity of the heart cells makes it possible for you to pump the oxygenated blood throughout your body
