I know lots of "home remedies" for cold sores - I've tried them all. They help with the discomfort but won't make the sore go away. Vinegar helps some with the pain. Hydrogen peroxide helps dry it up.

BUT, L-Lysine, an amino acid, will definitely speed the healing. Take it internally and purchase a salve with it in it. (Quantum makes a good one, available at health food stores.)

Also Lemon Balm (melissa officinalis) in a tea is clinically proven effective against the Herpes simplex virus. (European Journal of Herbal Medicine, Vol. 1, No. 1).

Other herpes fighters are Garlic, Echinacea, Aloe Vera, Eucalyptus, Yarrow, Elder Flower or Berry, Burdock, St. John's Wort.

There is a lip balm you can buy for cold sores. I can't remember what it is called but I am sure if you go to any health food store or pharmacy they will help you.

Home remedy? Not so much...but Abreva really works. I also use alcohol sometimes to help dry up the bumps... it works...but it doesn't get rid of the pain.

My family doctor told me to tear off a little piece of newspaper and put it on the cold sore and repeat several times.
Do it as often as possible..Mine went away about a week in a half.
