Is that true? The basement is just as large as the 1st floor. About 1000 square feet.

you can close down the vents a little at a time (like half shut .... 3/4 shut then all the way shut) in the basement during the summer. closing the lower vents will slow the airflow across the evaporator coil and may cause the unit to freeze. you need to keep an eye on the suction side line (the big copper line going to the condenser) to watch for frost. if the suction line starts to frost, you need to open the vents back up.

since cool air is heavier, the lower floors will naturally be cooler. by shutting the basement vents, you force the cool air upstairs where it will do the most good.

Heating and A/C systems are designed for a specific air flow. Altering the system (adding new vents) may require adjusting the system.

That said, closing a vent should not be a problem with efficiency. Contact a HVAC tech to be sure. Good luck.

i've got examine a pair of surveys on that undertaking and the outcomes have been you may get extra helpful mileage with a/c off utilising around city even inspite of the shown fact that it did not extremely say how lots. With the cost of gasoline it somewhat is precious to to fill up and write mileage down and run a week or so with a/c off and do same with a/c on and evaluate mpg. The survey did coach there wasn't lots differance at street speeds as a results of fact the homestead windows down interfered with the areodynamics of the motor vehicle.
