Or is it just me who detects a bit of "white South African" in a lot of them?

Yes they are.

LOL... go to Australia and find out... we don't want the racist image but it truly is an extremely racist country.

My family is from the UK but I have dark hair and white skin.. for the dark hair I usually hear "Go back to your own country"

So... if your not white and blonde AND have an Australian accent forget ever being truly accepted.

People will give you the fake smile and be nice to tourists but that isn't the real deal :D You won't ever get into society and be part of the Australian community in a huge way if your not the Aussie ideal. Truthfully they don't even really like Americans, English people, .. oh you know anyone who wasn't born in Australia and looks 10000000% white.

Anyone who says we aren't racist is a liar. I'm Australian and I have to kick my own self at times and rethink my own ideas. It's horrible to say but it is true we are all raised that way, even in the schools.

Outside of a city it's hard to find anyone who has ethnic friends, even in a city unless you are ethnic. People think just because they don't say throw rubish at Asians and so on that they aren't racist but ask yourself fellow Australians how many of your friends are black? It's not enough to feel oh but we treat them nice, we need to change the mentality and say we are all the same I am colourblind. Then we are not racist.

As an Australian, I don't see that we are but I can't get inside other people's heads to know how racist they think we are so the answer would have to be that there is too much generality and subjectivity in your question to admit of a reasoned answer. It's a thought-provoking question, though, and I thank you for it. I hope I'm not and that's all I can ask for. I think all you other races are probably more racist than I think you are (no offence intended). Racism is now a product of outmoded thinking but it had a survival advantage in evolutionary terms and many Australians are probably quite racist (like the rest of the earth's peoples, I feel). It will probably go when religion does if we are lucky enough for that day to come. I'm certainly not pro-American (too much religion) or English (too much colonialism) but the treatment of aborigines in Australia (more in the past than now) is nothing to be proud of for the most part. Many of them continue to have special problems in this country which our governments attempt to ameliorate with too little success. I welcome anybody who can help their plight to do so. Perhaps Bill Gates could help (I think he already does something which would be a little embarrassing if it were true).

Personally I feel that white australians are more racist than white south africans because they have not properly been held accountable for all their racist attitudes as white south africans have.
