They're the surfaces you play on. The tops or tops and bottoms of the drums (or back and front of the bass drum).

Typically, when you look at opening line offerings (the least expensive) from the drum manufacturer, they save money by putting cheaper heads on the drums.

If you choose to play, as you get better, and play on more and more sets, you will get a feel for how different heads will play, and you will develop some favourites.

Some are thicker, some are coated, some give you more play (bounce) and when tuned properly, they all sound a little different and they play differently.

For the most part though, the good drummers don't pay a lot of attention to that. They have a favourite head set up, and when they purchase a new set, they will go out and get whatever heads they prefer and install them.

In my experience, the ones that complain the most about heads were at a store trying out new drums, and didn't even know they hadn't been tuned. And you wouldn't be buying a set based on the heads anyway...

the head is the skin you beat on,you know the clear plastic acrylic
part on top of the drum facing you,and when you tune the heads you use a key tighting heads to adjust what kind of sound you want to come out them drums.

the "head" is the part you hit with the stick.
